In the law it is written, "By men of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord." 1Cor 14:21

At certain times in Christian history, speaking in tongues served as a miraculous manifestation of the Holy Spirit in which men of God were able to speak in languages unknown to them. This helped spread the Gospel to people of foreign origin. At times the gift of tongues was also used for personal devotion to God. But there is another side to tongue speaking, a very ominous and foreboding one. When tongues speaking is abused, even as it once was in the Corinthian church of the first century and is similarly abused today, tongues turns from a sign of blessing to a sign of judgment. Most of tongues speaking today is a psychologically induced phenomenon; some of it is demonically induced; and very little of it, if any, is from the Holy Spirit.
